Accidents are Accidents, A True Story

The Mellow Afternoon of June 2010

Angel Reign has turned a year old last month. She reached that without any huge health trouble.  She can walk this time as well as climb back and forth in her blanket hammock.  That afternoon, we are both in her room. Her dad is lying down on the sofa watching tv waiting for his call of duty.

The overexcited one year old, who has just learned to walk maybe a month ago, threw her pacifier on the floor.  I need to go to the dining area to sterilize it.  I left her playing in her ‘duyan’ and as I glance I saw her walking her way to the living room back and forth seems like practicing her steps.  I get the cap of the thermos and put the pacifier inside, pour water enough to cover the tip of the orthodontic pacifier.  It is on the left corner of our oblong-shaped wooden and glass dining table.  The distance of the thermos cap is maybe half of a ruler.  I felt some urge to drink a chocolate so I decided to leave it sterilizing for a while and I headed to the right far end of the table where the choco jar is. Since Angel is not wearing her beeping shoes, I did not notice she is near the table that is about two and a half feet tall. I always make it sure that all the chairs are tucked-in because she can climb it. I am about to pour the powder on my cup when I heard Angel terribly crying! I saw her beside the chair, sitting on the floor and her shirt is wet with boiled water –seeing the thermos cap and the pacifier scattered…The chair is not moved at all.  I speculated that she might just step on the chair’s foot support (wooden panel on each side so as to help it balance) that is why she was able to reach the thermos cap and accidentally drenched herself…

That water in the thermos, as I recall was just boiled twelve noon (12nn) and the incident happened 4pm, my diary says.  It is not the thermos that fell but its cap with the sterilizing pacifier, it is nearly a cupful! I was shocked!  I remember shouting “Angel!!!”  I just heard Raymer asking what is it…he then saw the baby. To my panic, I just lifted her up and was not able to remove her shirt at once to avoid more clinging – Ray told me to do so. Maybe for about twenty minutes, I heard my baby crying and screaming.  It is unbearable and hurting seeing her cannot stand the pain that she almost bend her body while standing.  Her skin below her right jaw, neck, right shoulder and armpit was red  but worse on her chest nearly hitting her nipple.  It dripped on the stomach but there, it is not that bad.  The wounds turned watery.

Best Tips for Expecting Moms

There is no shortcut for excited moms-to-be, here are few guides and hints to help you cope on the firsts months of your newborn:

The Birthing Day

Prepare a hospital bag, so husband and family members will not forget anything in panic, fill it with:

- your comfortable easy-to-slip on clothes

- underwears (panties and brassier)

- slippers or flat sandals for you

- your toothbrush

- your own spare blanket and pillow

- thermos with hot water (or plug-in airpot)

- Distilled water (Wilkins or Absolute)

- Baby wipes (do not buy generic and cheaper brands it may contain harsh chemicals)

- plastic cup, disposable spoon and fork, plate

- your baby’s blanket (pranela/lampin), booties, gloves and cap to cover her on the first minutes. Name your baby’s stuff, the nurses MIGHT interchange them accidentally with other babies in the nursery (it happened to my firstborn, we got an old blanket/pranella and the new ones was given to another baby – do not worry we did not protested, we let it be…just wanting you to be reminded of it).

* medium size towel

* soap (for the baby)  to give the birthing assistants

*adult diaper for you (the first days after giving birth – you will get a heavy flow (like menstruation).

*70%  alcohol

-In a PLASTIC ENVELOP (put inside the bag):
*Philhealth/Medicard Documents and receipts (photocopied)
*Marriage Contract of Parents (original and photocopy 2pcs)
*Credit Card/Cash/ATM
*Black ball pen
* Be sure to have a CLEARLY WRITTEN COPY of your child’s name for the hospital to register – check on the birth certificate (spelling, date, parents’ name, middle initial –for sure check the whole document)

The moment you see blood spotting on your underwear that is the time...

Buying Clothes

Size
It is not so practical to buy lots of clothes for the first six months because your baby is growing too fast but still, there is another option if you still insist on buying – buy larger sizes (BUT not too big to swallow the whole of your baby!), that is to make sure that the baby can use the clothes for more than just a month or two and you need not buy another set sooner…

Color
If you are too excited to buy clothes for the baby and you do not know the gender yet – you can not go wrong with white and or yellow – it looks fine on both sexes.

Colorful (resembling flowers) clothes might attract insects more although they look really nice to see.

It is important to buy BIB too. Include it on your buying list.

Design
It is best to choose plain than the printed ones so you can easily see or catch even the smallest insect that might pester the baby.  It is also recommended in buying linens (pillow case and bed spreads).

Another thing to consider is comfort in clothes-changing, cotton shirts and undershirt (sando) might look best and comfy design, the cloth itself is the best because it is breathable but BETTER choose the buttoned or Velcroed front clothes even for overall (clothes with socks and hood) clothes. Babies are very delicate and might easily get hurt just getting the shirt out while the buttoned once can easily be removed by simply lifting her back while protecting her head. Make sure to get the one with smallest and buttons (sometimes hidden by a piece of cloth) and always check if they are still adhering tightly every after washing – accidents on swallowing is possible. Zippers might irritate the baby’s skin.

Comfort

Babies want to feel warm like they are inside the womb – especially in the cold days. Do not forget to buy her three-fourths shirts.

Choosing Diapers

Although the use of cloth diapers is the best for baby’s skin and comfort, busy ‘mom and dads’ prefer diapers that offer the same convenience plus more.  Considerations:

- the efforts (if you can pay for a laundry, good). The time you will spend on washing can be your rest timeo bonding time with your baby.

- the consumables like water bill, electricity bill (on ironing for disinfecting), detergent soap

To sum it up, it almost costs you the same, indeed! Why not choose convenience? There are diapers that feels like cloth and as soft as cotton. Do not go for the plastic ones.

SCAN International – Aid to Humanity, a Glory to God

Hi, everyone. Being a bona fide member of the ‘Church of Christ’ (Iglesia ni Cristo), I could not just sit and let other people (especially non-members) believe that SCAN members being mistakenly tagged as  social offenders depriving others of human rights, causing chaos and even hurting other people. For I knew for myself and I witnessed how these noble people dignifiedly performed their duties primarily to our Lord God and to humanity.

SCAN was first started as a hobby by the members who shared the same interest of liking the two-way radio communication. Because of the increasing membership, it has been registered in the Securities and Exchange Commission

The simple use of the radio equipment has been brought to a higher level by ensuring the members are trained and later on passing the examination given by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). In February 6, 1986 it was registered in the Philippines as a Radio Amateur Group (RAG) who later been known to have the largest number of members in the Philippines for the category.

-The surrounding is quite wonderful for kids.  There are a lot of effigies of different cartoon characters to pose with beside the pools - can be a good remembrance in pictures. Kids will be very happy. Surroundings are clean. There are two pools- one for adult and the other for kids.

-The view of the premises is three-fourths amazing because the clubhouse is not yet finished by the time we have been there it is under renovation.

The 'Pros' and 'Cons' of Gadgets on Children

My children before were asking for dolls or other toys on special occasions likethis upcoming school closing. But nowadays, they are really influenced by high technology too, they opt for a touch screen, tablet or notebook for a gift.

My firstborn Angel had her earliest try on computer when she was four. I can remember the trending game then is Farm Mania. She was just watching me and her father at first then we never really notice when she plays by herself without our guidance. By five, she also learned MS Word basics typing/encoding and drawing on Paint app.

I wonder what is the difference between the hobbies of today than that of the old days. Basically, studies prove that more and more children get obese at a younger age because they cut on exercise or body movement – instead of doing some other things that would make them sweat they tend to get satisfied sitting around while playing games on their Android gadgets.

What is Mystery Shopping

The first thing that comes to our mind when we look for an on-line accomplished job is encoding, tutorial, translating or ‘pay per click’ advertising. Mystery shopping has been there for long worldwide but not been so popular in the Philippines.

What is Mystery Shopping? As the name implies, it is shopping on mystery - a task done to shop  without the knowledge of the store employees and manager to assess the quality of products and services they offer and observe the problems that needed to be addressed right away. That is why Mystery Shoppers are sometimes called Customer Experience Evaluator. Those problems are crucial to the marketing of the establishment or product and even service the company offers the prospective consumers.  Yes, Companies pay mystery shoppers (or market research evaluators) to do that.  It is mostly for management purposes.  It is sure hard to tell the customer experience if you have not been a customer.

Parenting Issue: Juvenile Attraction

My ten year-old daughter suddenly becomes so conscious with how she looks, the mirror on the wall that has been hanging there for a long time begging for attention now turned into my Angel Reign's favorite nook.

Oh my! I am surprised to find-out that she is a little bit getting serious with having a crush. Imagine having her crush's name as her mobile hotspot's password?! Before I am just vexing her about this boy,  a friend's son, who is known to be her admirer.  Just a  not so serious thing at all.

Children need to feel that parents are open to the idea of them having such feelings that naturally occur sideways during puberty. As their physical body changes, the hormones that brought those changes also affect their mental and emotional being.  And it is important that they know that this  is a 'welcome thing' because this is crucial getting their trust in this very important matter that really needs extreme parental guidance.

If we, parents, get impulsive upon hearing the most handsome guy or the prettiest girl or the brightest in the class who has often been the hero in your child's stories  then took it negatively and scold the child about it, we are just teaching them to start lying sooner or later. Of course, we have a hint right away of what is 'between the lines' - no matter how we deny, this is part of their growing-up.  What is important is that we make sure, we are ready to listen and they are confident that we are a FRIEND.

Parents too will feel secure having the confidence that children turn to them in all sort of these changes - along the way, advices on how the child should properly react on some situations they might encounter, we can freely give them without any hint of rejection on their part.

Pros and Cons of Retail and Wholesale Buying

You can read this in parts if you want- come back some other time if you can not finish one reading, because this is really a long article. But I know blogworms(bookworms) will enjoy it as well as the tips and tricks within. It is also written in Tagalog or Filipino language for my fellow-countrymen.  I set the Filipino translation in an Bookman OldStyle font to easily identify both languages.

Budgeting differs from one household to another. Why? Not just because of the household size and the amount of income differences but also the schedule such income becomes available matters too in planning the expenditures- there are those who have their salary on a daily (for self-employed individuals), and for the employed sector weekly, every 15th or monthly basis.

Ang pag-bu-budget ay nagkakaiba-iba sa bawat pamilya. Bakit?

As a mom, I do the budgeting. Buying groceries is a bit challenging. I have learned this tip after trying one method after the other at a period of time (months of use) so I can determine which works well with my family’s weekly budget.

At a glance, buying in bulk, largest pack or wholesale saves a lot. That is when you have ‘extra’ in your budget, because if you do not have you will end-up sacrificing other stuffs from your grocery list- you can not buy anymore this thing or that because your suppose-to-be budget all went to the biggest pack of milk (etc.) which is consumable in a month’s time. Sometimes, a little sacrifice can make things better too,the following three weeks milk (or whatever you bought in large pack or wholesale) will not be any more in your budget listing. It really depends on HOW MUCH you will sacrifice, if that would mean you will be short or transportation allowance to work or for your children’s schooling,  short of cash on hand in cases of emergencies IT MAY NOT BE WORTH IT.

This is advisable for those who do groceries on a weekly basis because of a weekly income schedule. For a monthly basis, it is best of course to buy bigger packs or for weekly buyers,  if you are willing to sacrifice just for a week without some of the things you usually buy then go for it – like eating on a fastfood with the kids, buying phone  leather case, new socks or lipstick...not so urgent needs at all.

Shampoo/Conditioner :
I used to buy bottles of shampoo that I thought could last for almost a month of me and my daughters’ daily consumption, their dad uses men’s variety, he has a separate shampoo. I observed how fast it runs out, because it is open without a limit, my children or even I could have consumed more than we needed.  I noticed we all have this falling hair too – although shiny and silky smooth.

Not like when I  buy a dozen sachets, each sachet is good for two heads or even three of us (me and my two daughters) THAT  IS if you do not want to destroy your hair’s natural moisture with chemicals from over-shampooing.

I do not let my children use a sachet for each, everything that is too much might have an adverse effect like hair fall, dryness etc.  There is no denying that shampoos have chemicals too. It can be used daily but the amount must be managed.

What Made Every ‘Iglesia ni Cristo’ Chapels a Stand-out Landmark?

I know that you have dropped by in this site for some other reasons than reading post about 'faith' but it may satisfy your curiosity if you will glance on this article plus links on pertinent Youtube videos.

Literally everywhere in the Philippines, INC chapels have always been a familiar sight.  Every corner even at the most inaccessible places – you will just be surprised how these chapels had been built (how are the materials transported) considering the difficulty of transportation brought about by topography. It has all been the work of our almighty God- he made these things possible with his help and guidance.

Many people are wondering what made the chapels sturdy and looking great all the time. The secret lies beyond its construction and planning as well as unceasing maintenance. Before every chapel is erected, various testing were done in all aspects – the soil and the calamity faults are studied (whether the place is prone to windy storms/earthquake fault etc.) to adopt the construction of each chapel to the unpredictable environment. Every chapel has a new and own approach in matters of planning and architecture same goes with the actual construction. Rip-rapping is done for erosion prone grounds. The roofing are fortified for those chapels built in stormy places.  No paint can last a lifetime that is why re-paintings are done almost yearly and there are quality inspection team sent from the Central Office to check on the status of the chapel (inside and the building itself), the compound and the improvements inside- they recommend fixings and some cleaning needs to maintain each chapel – no chapel is exempted even the pastoral houses and offices.

Uninterrupted Service to Our Creator

Why Iglesia ni Cristo Members are Unstoppable in the Service of God?

The sight of brethrens/locales holding worship services inside a flooded chapel in Bulacan; the brethrens in the US unhindered by frozen streets and freezing weather walking far on their way to the chapel (as if nothing is wrong with the surroundings although news seen on tv says that it is unsafe to walk around) and a lot more calamity setbacks - are truly evidences of remarkable faith in our Lord God. People from different religions wonder why we, Church of Christ members, value our church membership that way.
