expression is usually used as a business term that also implies no profit or loss just a returned
investment.
Example:
The vendors
experienced a break-even selling last holiday
season.
Means that
the vendors may have sold their merchandise without the markup just to get back
their invested capital seeing the market is not as responsive as in the past
years. They have not earned a profit nor
incurred a loss.
